One of the great joys here in the Salish Sea, besides just cruising and anchoring out, is watching seals. Harbor seals are so dam cute you I think of them as dogs with flippers. They even beg like dogs. Very shy, generally, and quiet. Sea Lions on the other hand are larger, louder, aggressive, and aren’t afraid of anything. They remind me of Grizzly Bears. Both are masters at relaxing though. Both beautiful animals and are what they are. I was watching a gathering of five Harbor Seals begging for fish scraps as a guy was cleaning fish off a table over the dock. Was so orderly and peaceful. Then I imagined Sea Lions doing the same thing. They would spend more time fighting for scrap rights than eating.
As people we have so many personalities and differences, but at the end of the day are a lot like the seals. We can be quiet, orderly, and peaceful. Or we can be loud, obnoxious, and over confident. Often arguing and fighting just because it’s who we’ve become.
And the there’s the Harbor Seal personality with liquid courage added. We go from peaceful, reserved, quiet, to loud and obnoxious! Only we can Jekyll and Hyde like this! Then we wake up Harbor Seals again!
Wishing you fair winds and following seas!
Jeff
